Tim D. Neumann
Professional Photographer / Guide (World Wide)
Tim Neumann has been involved in all facets of photography for over four decades, from the film days when long evenings in the darkroom were the norm to the digital era where computers have replaced the darkroom. An avid study of all things technical, Tim has fully embraced the digital era and is prepared to teach it easily to those desiring to take their skills to the next level.
“It’s interesting to me how much the technology has changed in the marketplace, yet the underpinnings of making a great image remain the same.” Tim brings this philosophy with him as he helps those around them realize and capture unique and keepsake images of their own. “With the ubiquitous availability of high quality photo printing, we are now seeing a revival of the idea of creating fine art productions. It’s my goal to help anyone who wants to realize that fine art vision make that a reality.”
Tim has been teaching all aspects of imaging for over two decades, guiding new and seasoned photographers alike to images they previously had not imagined. “You know, a genuinely compelling image is an amalgamation of equipment, technical mastery, artistic vision, timing, and a dose of luck. At Soft Lite Workshops we work very hard to manage all of those aspects for you, so you can create something that you truly cherish. We’ll see you out there!”
Alex DeMets
Professional Photographer / Guide (South America)
My journey as a photographer began as a kid growing up in the Midwest of the United States, surrounded by cornfields. Bored with school, the surrounding landscape, and the prospect of living a mapped-out future, I began looking at nature photography as a kind of escape from the reality I was living in. The combination of creativity, exploration, and risk required to succeed as a nature photographer appealed to me from a young age. By the time I finished high school, I had determined that I would commit myself to the lifestyle of the most talented photographers in the world, and stick with photography until my work was equal to or better than that of those same photographers.
After years spent exploring the western United States, I began to feel as if the novelty of traveling in my home country had worn off. Confused about what direction to go in as a photographer, I decided on a whim to buy a ticket to Peru. I immediately fell in love with travel in South America, and the following several years of my life revolved around dreaming up adventures into remote and rarely photographed corners of the continent. I tended to carry out these photo expeditions on a shoestring budget. After becoming tired of hitchhiking and feeling limited by public transportation, I invested in a small motorcycle. Traveling for months on end allowed me to become fully immersed in different cultures; on my initial trips, I felt as if I were on a different planet. After a while, I began to relate more with people in these faraway places than I did with those from my home country. Going back to the US became more difficult with every consecutive trip..
Being a photographer primarily interested in the art of photography, I could have cared less about the business of photography. I never bothered trying to build a reputation or a social media following to generate income from photography, as it had always seemed far simpler to just work odd jobs to fund my travels. I eventually hit a point where going from motorcycle trips through the Amazon back to monotonous dead-end jobs became something I could no longer bear; I could sense I was wasting my potential as a photographer and needed a change; it then became my dream to move permanently to South America and open my own gallery.
After tens of thousands of miles covered via backpacking, hitchhiking, and motorcycle, countless months spent camping under the stars, and years of dreaming, struggling, and planning, I finally opened my gallery in El Chalten, Argentina. What you see displayed on my website and in my gallery is the result of over 7 years of exploration in South America and over 15 years as a photographer.
